A tree with reddish-brown bark and slender branches. The leaves and bark emit a pleasant cinnamon smell and taste. The attractive, pinkish young flush is conspicuous on slender twigs. Mature leaves are 7-25 cm long and 3-8 cm broad, found in near opposites on twigs, elliptic in shape with a markedly rounded base and a shortly pointed apex. 3- 5 veins are prominent on both surfaces. The upper surface is dark green, shiny and smooth, while the lower surface is paler and dull. The petiole is slightly concave above. Pale yellowish green flowers, about 1 cm each, borne at the leaf nodes form loose, conicalshaped clusters about 10-15 cm long. Fruits are up to 12.5 mm long, ovoid shaped and dark purple in colour, with a narrow rim at the base.
