Tree with a smooth, whitish grey trunk with twisted ridges. Branchlets are often hairy when young, and twisted when old. Leaves are velvety, bright green on both surfaces, sometimes whitish beneath, 3-5 segmented from one attachment point. If 5 segments present, the middle segments are much longer at 3.5-14.5 cm and 4.5 cm broad in comparison to others which are 5.5-9.5 cm long and 3-4.5 cm broad. The basal ones are 2.5-5 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm broad, elliptic in shape with an unequal base and a bluntly pointed apex. The many-flowered inflorescence is 3-17 cm long, borne at the leaf nodes on long stalks, dividing twice as often up to 6 times, white or whitish and purple, and each about 1.0 cm. The ovoid fruit has one seed, about 2 cm long, black or purple-black when mature, and fleshy. The lower 2/3 is usually covered by a persistent calyx.
