A well-branched tree with a dark, greyish-brown trunk and a spreading crown. The pale, leathery leaves are arranged in a somewhat zig-zag manner on the twigs and have fine hairs beneath, a rounded base and apex, and are broadly ovate with finely tooth-like margins, 2-9 cm long and 1.5-5.0 cm broad. The three veins that run from base to apex are easily visible. There are two prickles at the axils of the leaf, one curved and one straight, forming a characteristic feature. The greenish-white flowers are borne in groups in the axils of the leaves. The edible fruits are globular, about 1.5-2 cm, turn yellow when ripe and have one seed.
