The smooth greyish stem gives rise to a crown with greenish grey branches. The bright green leaves that contain 3 segments (trifoliate) are aromatic when crushed. During maturity leaves become oblong in shape with a tapered base and apex. Young leaflets resemble the foot of a hen. The yellowish green flowers are found in clusters at the axils. The fruit is a four-lobed brown capsule.
Found in forests in wet, intermediate and lower montane areas - up to 1300 m.
