The trunk is corky, greyish and furrowed. Stems are slender, but thickened at the nodes. The bright green, oval-shaped leaves with 3-5 veins are almost sessile, arranged in opposites on twigs, with a rounded base and tapering apex, and about 4-12 cm cm long and 2.5-6 cm wide. The greenish-yellow flowers are borne in terminal clusters. The fruits are globular, about 2 cm in diameter, black when ripe, few seeded. Seeds resemble coins.
