A deciduous tree with a silvery smooth bark and rounded crown. Branches are more or less symmetrically arranged. The pinkish white and flattened terminal bud at the end of the twigs is elliptical. The broadly ovate or rounded leaves arranged in opposites have a rounded base and minutely pointed apex, about 6-18 cm long and 3-16 cm broad, greyish green above and pale beneath. Stipules are conspicuous at the nodes, whitish green, papery, about 1-2 cm long and 1.0 cm broad. Inflorescences with numerous minute flowers are borne at the terminal ends of the short, lateral branches as greenish white globose heads about 3-4 cm in diameter, from which numerous spike like filaments radiate. The small fruitlets are crowded in dark brown heads.
