Stem usually unbranched and 10—60 cm broad, hollow, marked with large prominent leaf scars. Wood is soft and succulent. Leaf lamina is 75 cm long and broad, palmately lobed to varying extents, lobes pinnatifid or pinnatipartite. Inflorescences or single flowers are appearing in the axil of each leaf after their first formation. Flowers are fragrant and greenish yellow in colour. Fruit is a fleshy berry varying in shape from almost globose to ellipsoid and pyriform to cylindrical. Fruit is smooth or with 5 furrows, usually yellow-green in color, when ripe, with yellow, orange or red pulp.
