The greyish-brown trunk supports a mass of drooping foliage. The compound leaves carry 3–5 pairs of leaflets. The young flush is white and pendulous. Stipules are conspicuous, green, leaf-like, and directed somewhat vertically at the nodes. Internodes are inhabited by ants due to access available behind the leaf stalks. Leaflets are ovate, about 4–15 cm long and 2–5.5 cm wide. Flowering mostly occurs during the month of December. Inflorescences are borne on the axils of leaves and contain a cluster of honey-scented white flowers that attract bees. The fruit is a compressed pod, about 10 cm long.
