The straight stem has a rough brown bark. The brownish-green young leaves on slender drooping branches turn dark green when mature, 4-14
cm long and 2-6.5 cm broad, elliptical in shape with a tapering base and pointed apex. Clusters of small white flowers are borne as heads on the axils of leaves. The fruit is spherical, about 3 cm, covered with numerous blunt prickles, and changes colour from yellow to bright red when it ripens.
