The pale brownish stem supports the crown, where the red color leaf flush turns olive green in time. The leaves are oval to ellipsoid in shape with a prominent midrib and a network of fine lateral veins, a faintly teethed margin, tapered at base and slightly pointed at apex, about 6-15 cm long and 2-5 cm broad. The spreading inflorescences have many yellow coloured flowers with a reddish calyx. Ripe fruits are purple or black, seen in clusters of 4-5 and enclosed by the red calyx.
Forest understory, also found in the intermediate zone - up to 600 m.
