The bark is smooth and pale brown. The buds on young twigs are silvery. Leaves are about 3.5-12 cm long and 2-6.5 cm broad, spirally arranged, elliptic with a rounded base and a short pointed apex, dark green and shiny above. The impressed, rusty-coloured midrib, which is paler beneath is prominent and a few lateral veins are visible. The petiole is 6-17 mm long, and grooved above. Both male and female flowers are pale yellow, forming compact head-like clusters supported by velvety scales at the base, and borne at the leaf nodes in the upper parts of the twigs. The fruit is about 10 cm, ovoid, with a thin rim at the base, turning brownish-red and later to black during ripening.
