Shrubby or tree-like. Tree is erect, up to 5 m tall. It has hollow stems, frequently reddish-purple and woody at base. Leaf is roughly circular in outline, up to 30 cm or more in diameter, 7—9-lobed. Inflorescence is (4.5—) 10—30 cm long and bears both male and female flowers. Fruit is 1.2—2 x 1.21.8 cm and smooth in surface. Seeds are 7—l2 x 5—8 x 4—6 mm, shiny and greyish, beige or silvery in colour.
Naturalized near villages and other habitation, widespread.
