The trunk is greyish with vertical lines. The bark is flaky and exudes a gum when injured. Leaves are deciduous, dark green, about 8-30 cm long and 3-10 cm broad, elliptical in shape with a rounded base and pointed apex. Large, pinkish mauve coloured flowers found in terminal clusters. The fruits are broadly ovoid with a persistent calyx, splitting into 6 valves to release winged seeds
