Buthsarana grows well in the wet zone and lowlands of Sri Lanka. This yam variety grows up to 5-6 feet producing aggregated yams. Its leaves are fairly wide and elongated. The flowers produced by Buthsarana plants are red in color. It is also grown as an ornamental plant in home gardens. There are two varieties of this yam; ‘RedButhsarana’ and ‘White Buthsarana’. This can be harvested after a period of 8-10 months.
Buthsarana is rich in carbohydrates. These yams are rather sweet compared to other varieties of yams. It is used as an effective medicine for treating hepatitis and hemorrhage. It has a restraining ability against yellow fever and rheumatic diseases. The leaves and flowers of this variety of yam are used in the preparation of traditional medicine for snake venom (snake bites).
